As a student editor for the University of Missouri and NPR-affiliate, KBIA, I worked closely with Rebecca Smith, a reporter and producer for the KBIA Health and Wealth Desk . I was responsible for reporting on and producing on my own podcast episode for the Missouri Health Talks podcast. Throughout the semester I also worked to edit several episodes of the special project podcast known as Alphabet Soup. While working with KBIA to formulate and produce these episodes, I learned how to take a lengthy interview and boil it down to just a few important soundbites.

The art of journalism is taking pieces and parts and crafting them into a story that elevates the voices within that story. With audio this became a way for people to speak about their passions with a combination of soundbites and a consistent theme for the listener to follow along with.

Missouri Health Talks Podcast

I pitched the idea for a podcast episode for Missouri Health Talks to Rebecca Smith with the idea to compare rural and modern healthcare practices. I got into contact with a physician who has done both. Dr. Brittney Marshall shared her thoughts on how medicine has changed and how she learned to love rural medicine along the way. I enjoyed doing the interview because Marshall was open about her experience and how she came to find fulfillment in her work. The story began to tell itself when she talked about doing two different approaches to healthcare and the importance of access in both.

Alphabet Soup Podcast

I edited several podcast episodes for KBIA's special project, Alphabet Soup. This episode in particular focuses on the subject, Hope Schust, who expresses her emotions through music. While listening to the piece at first, I noticed a pattern where Schust consistently mentioned her love for music and the connection she has to it, brining her back to her roots. I knew I had to incorporate that into the episode and began to formulate the script so that the focus of the piece blended well with all of the soundbites.
